"HomeCampaignsAboutNewsDonateSave Legal Aid Step 1: Legal aid is under threat. The government is planning to change the rules so it cannot be used to help people challenge welfare benefit decisions when mistakes are made. Inaccurate benefit decisions can see people pushed into poverty. Expert advice allows them to challenge these decisions and make sure they are right.
Lord McNally is in charge of the government bill in the House of Lords. Email him urging the government to amend it to ensure thousands of people continue to benefit from expert legal advice.

The government are making sweeping changes to welfare reform. That means that in the next few years even more people will need expert advice to ensure they get the benefits the law says they are entitled to
Legal aid helps improve the accuracy of welfare benefit decisions, thus supporting the government’s aim of ensuring welfare benefit reaches the right people
Around 135,000 people use legal aid for welfare benefit cases every year and 58% of these are disabled people
38% of successful appeals for Disability Living Allowance, for example, are to people receiving legal aid, showing how many people will miss out if legal aid is removed.............
"Civil servants making decisions about people’s welfare benefits entitlements are supported by nearly 9,000 pages of guidance. Despite this, they often make the wrong decision. People claiming welfare benefits cannot afford lawyers to help steer them through complex benefit rules so without legal aid many will have their benefits unfairly cut, or removed entirely.
Please recognise the important role of legal aid in ensuring that people who are entitled to welfare benefits are not sucked into poverty just because they cannot afford expert advice. Please ensure that your government’s Bill on legal aid is amended and they continue to receive the support they need. Yours sincerely,
