Another conference on legal aid in June; by then we may be well into JR season :
"The future of Legal Aid - GovKnow policy briefing event: 6th June 2012
Reduced rates for Napo members.
Since its introduction in 1949 legal aid has provided access to justice for all when needed, regardless of socio-economic background. Previous governments have tried to reform legal aid and there have been numerous reviews looking at how legal aid can be made more targeted and more efficient.
The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill is currently being passed through parliament, though rigorous debate continues to slow its passage, and seeks to change its details. The Government claims that the existing system is one of the most expensive, per capita, in the world at £2.1b per annum, (23% of the MoJ budget) and needs to be streamlined. Whatever balance is eventually struck the reforms will have far reaching implications for all those working with or alongside the Criminal Justice sector.
Napo has negotiated a discounted rate of £125 plus VAT with GovKnow for Napo members or branch representatives who may be interested in attending this event. This timely, information-led briefing with prominent experts as well as Government and opposition speakers will examine the proposed reforms and will provide delegates with an opportunity for some lively debate.
Please quote JPNAPO at the time of booking to receive the discounted rate.
